Milo Little Olympics 2012 National Finals

A whopping 30,000 athletes, sports enthusiasts, and spectators from NCR, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao filled the Marikina Sports Complex over the weekend to witness the electrifying youth games.

To kick start the three-day sporting event, a grand opening ceremony initiated by a series of serenades performed by the FEU Chorale, inspired the capacity crowd in attendance inside Marikina Sports complex. DepEd National Capital Region BPESS Director Dr. Noeme Bellosillo, Marikina City Mayor Hon. Del. R. De Guzman, and Nestle Philippines President and CEO Mr. John Martin Miller were among those who attended.

A colorful parade of athletic delegations, an action packed performance from the Philippine Taekwondo Association Demo Team as well as high flying stunts by the 2012 UAAP cheer dance competition winners UP Pep Squad kicked off the grand affair.

Team NCR dominated the country’s most prestigious interschool junior sports competition and took home the MILO Little Olympics Perpetual Trophy for the first time.  Team NCR dethroned Team Visayas, who was aiming for a four-peat performance this year, and bested competing regions in a series of exciting matches.

Team NCR delivered waves of action-packed bouts and finished with a massive overall score of 614 points. The Visayas region’s athletes trailed closely behind the newly crowned champs and scored 575 points, while Mindanao and Luzon placed third (383.5 points) and fourth (357.5 points), respectively. Athletes and coaches of the National Capital Region expressed that this victory will spark a new winning streak to beat Team Visayas’ 3-peat record.

The elementary division rivalries bred thrill as NCR and Visayas went neck and neck in individual sports, namely Athletics, Gymnastics, Table Tennis, and Swimming. NCR’s elementary squad prevailed and contributed an impressive 294 points to their overall success. Team Visayas followed closely with 283 points while Mindanao placed third with 212.5 points and Luzon in fourth with 175.5 points.

In the secondary division, NCR elevated the action against its competitive opponents by touting high marks in Athletics, Sepak Takraw, Gymnastics, Swimming, and Volleyball. The winning region also shined in team sports, raking up a total of 320 points, while Team Visayas settled for second in this year’s secondary division games with 292 points. Team Luzon is a distant third with 182 points, while Team Mindanao ranked fourth with 171 points.

The MILO Little Olympics has reached about 22,000 student-athletes from over 900 schools nationwide throughout its entire campaign this year alone.  It is set to take off once again next year to launch another quality youth competition. The next host region Team Visayas seeks to bring the title back home to re-establish their dominance in the annual playoffs.

“The accomplishments and endeavors of our little champions continue to ignite the fire of the MILO Little Olympics. Truly, the competition has come a long way. MILO believes that the dignity of a true champion lies not in possessing the most honors, but in earning them by competing with passion, determination and a true sense of sportsmanship. In this light, the MILO Little Olympics extends MILO’s commitment to pursue its mission of building champions,” ~ Mr. John Martin Miller, Nestle Philippines President and CEO

“We are beyond ecstatic about Team NCR’s big win, but MILO’s commitment to youth sports development does not end here. We will continue to initiate and advance existing programs that will help them cultivate their knowledge, skills, sense of leadership, and drive to succeed.” ~ Dr. Robert Milton Calo, MILO Little Olympics NCR Regional Organizer

“The admirable character that our athletes exemplified in this year’s finale proves that the Philippine sports community has a bright future ahead. This year’s athletes did not only display a great amount of courage in overcoming challenges in their respective sports but also the eagerness to share their triumphs with their team and opponents,” ~ Mr. Robbie De Vera, MILO Sports Executive
