23rd Yakult 10 Miler: My 2nd 16K Run

23rd Yakult 10 Miler
April 01, 2012, 5:00AM
CCP Grounds (Vicente Sotto Street, near Star City)

Up hills and down hills are tackled, flyovers are conquered. Let me test it now on flat and friendlier CCP grounds via the 23rd Yakult 10 Miler! The host of my second 16K run.

I am posting this during the last week of registration period, so what I am going to share instead of the registration details are the race final instructions and the race routes that I got from the race kit:

RACE FINAL INSTRUCTIONS for the 23rd Yakult 10 Miler

PARKING - Paid Parking is available around the event area.

RESTROOM - Porta toilets are available at the rear of the Start/Finish Area.

CLOTHING CHECK-IN-SERVICE – Located at the rear of the Start/Finish area before the check-in entrance.  Only clothing will be accepted for check-in.  No bottles, coolers or other items.  We assume no responsibility for items checked-in.

RUNNING COURTESY – Stay near the right hand shoulder of the road so that runners coming back to your left have a clear lane.  Do not cut in front of another runner until you can safely do so.  If you decide to slow down or stop, gradually veer to the edge of the road.

AID STATIONS – Water is available at the start and finish area and every two kilometers in the race route.  There will be aid stations on the course where water and medical assistance will be available.  To keep the aid stations from being congested, continue on the last table and PLEASE KEEP MOVING.

Since I can not find an online map for this event, I am also sharing the images of the race routes.

10 Miler (16K) Race Route

3K and 5K Race Route

Team QuekQuek is again in full force joining this event.  Three of us running in the 16K category, and the other one in the 5K category.  As I’ve mentioned, this would be my second 16K run while this would be the first 16K run of TQQ's two members.  One member is sticking to the 5K category for now.  The three of them wishes to run 10K, but the category is not available in this event.

Let’s do this team!
(LOL! just adding some tenderness here)

Further details and history about this event can be found here.  Good luck to all 23rd Yakult 10 Miler runners! Let’s run! and keep on running…

Sunday Running Motivation: What Distinguishes Those of Us

“What distinguishes those of us at the starting line

 from those of us on the couch is that we learn through running

to take what the days gives us,

what our body will allow us,

and what our will can tolerate."

Post Race Piece: Race Against Raze

Join me in this drama as I share to you one memorable run that I just finished, the Race Against Raze.

Memorable because this is my first 16K run and also my birthday run for this year.  This is also the first time that my “fun team”, Team QuekQuek (TQQ) is officially running together in a race.  Me running in the 16K category and all three ladies in the 10K category.

Team QuekQuek arriving at the "00:00" feel.

16K runners gearing up for the gun start at 5:15AM. Three more minutes and we’re off the road!

It was still dark and there's a certain street along the route, filled with the scent of the "dama de noche" flower.  I'm not sure why but, it gives me goose bumps.

This is how runners differ from the rest.  It's still dark and we’re all geared up taking the road.

The first kilometers are always the hardest.

Running can be a good vocabulary teacher.  It can perfectly define to you the difference between streets, avenues and flyovers.

Seeing the city in a different perspective.

The road that separates 16K runners from the fun runners. Some are running ahead, some made the wrong turn, some cheated and took the short cut, some gave up and quit. I continued and took the lonely road ahead.

The roads above that are less traveled by foot.

First photo says “God will find a way”. As always, I believe and found my way back to the finish line.
Second photo says “Ribbon Station Ahead”. I hope it says “Portalet ahead”
Third photo – the first time that I don’t appreciate Derek Ramsey smiling at me. I was climbing back the steep flyover here on my way to the finish line.

The turn around heading back to the finish line is always the most challenging part, but also the part when vigor is rejuvenated.

The string bracelets that are more precious than gold!  The very important accessory that you wear to the finish line.

Heaven on earth – The FINISH line!

At the FINISH line, reuniting with my team who ran in the 10K category.

And I did it! I finish my first 16K run! And my team with their 10K run! Congratulations to ourselves!

Congratulations also to the organizer Pep Squad for a job well done! Kudos to:
  • the perfectly designed singlet and medal
  • the great venue, running route and a “wow stage and photo booth”
  • the ample hydration (I just personally wish that there's also some energy drink in the hydration station)
  • the oh so kind race assistants and marshals
  • and BEST of all, the earliest (as far as I know) posting of race result. Jeez! released in the afternoon of the race day, bravo!
We look forward in running again in your events Smile Let’s run and keep on running!

Sunday Running Motivation: I Have Finished!

"In running, it doesn't matter whether you come in first,

in the middle of the pack, or last.

You can say, 'I have finished!

There is a lot of satisfaction in that."

Fred Lebow, New York City Marathon co-founder

Finisher's Medal and Certificate from my first 16K run through Race Against Raze.

It’s my BIRTHDAY and I’m Running my First 16K at Race Against Raze

How do you start your day on your birthday?
101_8327Mine is very predictable, I run.  I started doing that last year and now it’s becoming a habit.  The only difference is that I am now running on longer distance.

It was just last year when I joined my first serious 5K race through the Athena All Women’s Run.  The race was four days from my actual birthday.  So I decided to run in the morning of my birthday as part of my preparation.  From then on I’ve been running at least three times a week and been joining fun runs which are all documented on this blog along with my musings about running

So I ran again in the morning of my birthday this year.  A friend gifted me my first 16K run which will be at Race Against Raze,  happening three days from my birthday.  If the run falls on my birthday month, I call it as my “birthday run”.

My goal is to run a new and longer distance on my birthday each year.  It gives a lot of positive motivations on myself knowing that I could run on longer distances as I grow older.  The only negative part is that, I could not do anything aggressive during my birthdays.  No fancy foods, no alcohol, no hyperactive adventures and the likes.  But heck, what could be more positive than having a good health right?

Race Against Raze
Race Against Race, dubbed as “Fire Awareness Fun Run is happening on March 18, 2012 at Bonifacio Global City (BGC), with the following race categories:

  3K = Php. 450 Gun Start: 5:45
  5K = Php. 550 Gun Start: 5:40
10K = Php. 550 Gun Start: 5:30
16K = Php. 650 Gun Start: 5:15

The event aims to promote fitness and wellness among participants, as well as to increase the awareness of fire safety and prevention. Part of the proceeds of the event will go to the following beneficiaries;
1. Philippine Children's Medical Center "Child NeuroScience Center"
2. Philippine Institute of Quezon City (PIQCAA) Scholarship Fund

For further details about this race, you may check the organizer’s website here

Now going back as to why I said that this run is a gift.  My good old friend Bagets is the one who registered me (us) on this run.  Bagets is the friend whom I describe to other people as a person who always give the most practical gift ever, apart from possessing a lot more unique attitudes.  He is also the same friend I am talking about on my profile who “out of the blue, registered my whole family to a fun run”.  The fun run that started it all.

To talk about Bagets needs a separate post (I think I also said this before on another post).  I actually has an unposted draft about him but I ‘m still picking the best time to post that piece.  Now, what more fun about this is that, Bagets did not only registered me and hubby to this run, but… he also registered the whole Team QuekQuek! Yep!  The whole team is running on this race!

This is why I always say I am God’s blessed daughter.  That I can run and blog about it, more so having a friend like Bagets .  Thank you Bagets! Smile

Run United 1 2012: Post Race Piece

Three of my running buddies (and two neighbors) joined the 10K category of the Run United 1 2012 at the SM Mall of Asia.  It’s the first 10K run of my buddies, the pack that composed our fun team that we endearingly calls Team QuekQuek (TQQ). RU1 2012 doesn’t have a 16K category, the distance that I am currently training for my next run so I did not officially join this event.  But as usual, I was was there as supporter and photographer.  I’m the most senior among the group in age and a few months in running experience.  This is the reason behind why they endearingly calls me as “coach” (LOL), that I funnily converted into “coUch” (more LOL).  Well I don’t have a choice right?

Fist thing we noticed when we arrived at the Mall of Asia is that the place is not too crowded compared to the other Runrio events that we previously joined.  We thought maybe because the 21K started in another venue which is in BGC.
Arriving in the not so crowded MOA

Just as expected from all Runrio events, it progress according to scheduled time and gun starts.  The 10K category has a single wave gun start only unlike the 5K and 21K.

the not so crowded 10K starting line / warm up / photo-opps

There’s ample hydration all through out the race.  Probably the reason also why there’s “ample” trash along the race route.  It is just frustrating why some runners can’t learn to toss the plastic cups in the ready trash bags that are just around, or just even toss it on the side of the road so it will not get in the way of the trailing runners and would be easy for the cleaners during garbage collection.  I don’t think a few seconds of concern will affect their personal records.

TQQ’s first sighting after the half distance turn-around.  And yes, I am running/chasing our team the whole 10K route Winking smile.  It’s a nice “warm-up” for my upcoming 16K race.  But  I’m always at the non-runners side of the road, pushing and pulling my buddies when needed. LOL.

Bananas on the road!
101_81527K – Push yourself to the limit

8K – You’ve gotten this far why stop now?

10K – Final turn is stairways to heaven

FINISH LINE – is “Yeah I did it! Heaven!

The Run United 1 Active Health Expo offered a lot of indulging and enjoyment for runners .
101_8231Completing our running day is “uploading” at “Mang Inasal” which instantly became a post race runners hub.  The runners are enjoying their unlimited rice.  We  exchanged our unsolicited opinions for this event while we were eating, and to share some:
- my buddies prefer their New Balance singlet from RU3 2011 than their current singlet.
- our neighboring table is talking about my hubby’s 21K finisher shirt from the RU3 2011 which I was wearing.  They are openly talking that they like the design better than the current one.

Luckily my friends decided to check their loot bags content when we’re done eating and found that Mac’s bag is lacking three items, the water bottle, a canned product and some vitamins/medicine. We went back to the claim spot and the people manning the finisher's kits kindly completed my friend’s kit.  We were surprised though to find that the whole area is already peaceful from activities.  It was still early and it seems the activities ended early or the runners are gone earlier than usual.

Later on the day we found from the news, updates and post race comments and feedbacks that there’s a lot of runners who were not provided with the finisher’s kit and shirts.  Runrio immediately issued the following statement:
Dear Run United 1 21k Runners, We sincerely apologize for those who were not able to get their finisher items today. Based on our initial discussion, there was a breach of security resulting to lost of items. While we are investigating further, we take full responsibility of what happened. We guarantee that you will receive your 21k items as soon as we are able to finalize the timelines with our suppliers and process. A representative from RunRio will contact each and everyone of you and will revert to you as soon as possible. Again, our sincerest apologies. RunRio Inc.
