My Accidental Run and The Run for Pasig River 11.20.2011

my drop zone
Part of my running story is when I get caught in a mob of runners that happened a year ago. It was October 10, 2010 the date popularly known as “10.10.10”.  I was on my way to my weekly aerobics session at the Esplanade SM Mall of Asia when we were caught in a worst traffic some two to three kilometers away from my destination.  The road is already blocked from motorists and there were people everywhere.  My hubby had no choice but to drop me off so I can reach my destination by foot.

Though I am aware that races are regular events at the SM Mall of Asia and that it is known for hosting races with huge numbers of participants, still, the number of people that day is overwhelming.  You can find groups of students from different schools, employees from different banks, government employees from different agencies and a lot more people from different groups and organizations.  There were tons of people in the streets, in the sidewalks, in median islands and everywhere.  Merely finding a clear walking route is impossible, what more to walk without bumping to anybody. I realized it would be impossible to reach my destination within thirty minutes by simply walking.

Looking at the pace of a bunch of runners in the main road, I decided to run along with them.  I am aware that it is not ethical to do that but I think it is better than being one among the "litter" of people in the sidewalks and everywhere. Funny that it is called a running event while most of the people are walking. My anticipation was right that the runners were heading to the finish line which is just across the street where my aerobics session is being held also.  I was able to catch my aerobics session missing only the warm-up part.  I laughed at the instance thinking that I had enough warm-up from the run.  That accidental run gave me two unforgettable memories.  First, it opened my interest in running or to join a race. Second, I had the experience of running alongside a former Philippine President who in spite of his age has an impressive pacing and stamina.

Some of the photos I took during the Run for Pasig River 10.10.10.  The race is almost over by this time but the program is still on-going.  It is no longer too crowded from the place where I took these photos.

"A Run for Pasig River 10.10.10” broke the Guinness World Record for the most number of participants in a foot race having more than 116,086 participants.  The previous record was held by the 1988 Bay to Breakers in San Francisco, USA, with 110,000 runners.

The Run for Pasig River is happening again this year on November 20, 2011 at the SM Mall of Asia (Finish Area).  There will be a 3K, 5K and 10K events which will have different starting areas but will all finish at the SM Mall of Asia.

This year, the event is targeting a 150,000 number of participants in an attempt to break our own Guinness of  World Record.
